|  Qasim International Container Terminal commenced operations in August’1997 and has the distinction of being the first state of the art modern container terminal in Pakistan. The first initial 3 years saw QICT averaging 159000 teu throughput yearly mainly due to the fact that this terminal was 50 kms away from the main city.
It was a daunting and an uphill task to increase volumes when I joined QICT in August’2001 as the mindset of the shippers and consignees had to be altered and I am proud to say that with the multi-talented , dedicated and highly motivated workforce being ably guided by a very professional management team succeeded in turning around the Company and since 2004 are maintaining the number 1 position amongst 4 container terminals presently operating in Pakistan with a 36% market share.
We are the only terminal in Pakistan where in the customer has the option to clear his container from QICT or clear same from our off dock container terminal “NLCCT’ located in the heart of the city. This strategy has provided the necessary boost in our throughput which catapulted from 159,000 teus in 2001 to 752,495 teus in 2011 and we expect to achieve approximately 760,000 teus in 2012.
With this kind of growth we were able to convince our parent company DP World to invest USD350 million for the extension of our present terminal. Our new berths are ready for operation in November 2010 with 3 brand new Super post panamax twin lift cranes.
We have also invested USD 6 million in building a dry port in Prem Nagar which is approximately 22 kms from Lahore where in we would operate trains on a daily basis between our terminal and Lahore shunting imports and exports.
We at QICT consider health; safety and welfare of our employees an integral part of our terminal operations and provide a safe workplace for all including our clients and contractors.
We are aiming for a fruitful 2012 and beyond and hope to make a substantial contribution to DP World’s success and continuity.
